Ruthless People is an underrated comedy film from the guys who brought us Airplane! and the original The Naked Gun movies, David and Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams, otherwise known as ZAZ. And, yes, that's the same David Zucker who later directed BASEketball with the creators and voices of South Park.
Starring Dan DeVito, Judge Reinhold, Bette Midler, and Helen Slater, Ruthless People is about . . . well, you know. The wife of a fashion tycoon is kidnapped, and her husband, who doesn't really care about her and has a mistress, has to pretend and play along with the theatrics of paying the ransom. But the mistress is up to her own blackmail scheme, and hilarity ensues.
Ruthless People takes the classic TV show Three's Company misunderstanding humor to another level. Ruthless People is still as funny as when I first saw it at the theaters in 1986. It's not children-friendly, but Ruthless People is a forgotten, must-see comedy movie directed by the ZAZ trio.
