U-571

People hate Nazis. It's no wonder so many movies portray them as villains, and audiences love watching Nazis get their asses kicked. Think Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

U-571 is a historical drama about a military group of Americans who are tasked with the mission to steal the notorious Nazi Enigma coding machine and end up commandeering a German U-boat to survive in hostile waters.

While it is fiction, U-571 was co-written by one of my favorite filmmakers, David Ayer, who had actually served in the U.S. Navy as a submariner. Ayer wrote Training Day and directed Suicide Squad, Street Kings, and The Beekeeper, and I appreciate a lot of the little technical details in U-571 that I don't recall seeing in other submarine films, like the water leaking into the control room.

U-571 was directed and also co-written by Jonathan Mostow, who may be unknown to most people, but I think he did a fantastic job directing Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

It may not be historically accurate, but U-571 is a truly underrated film, particularly in the submarine sub-genre. With a great story and an outstanding ensemble cast that includes Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel, and Jon Bon Jovi (yes, that Jon Bon Jovi), U-571 has been one of my favorite war films, and watching Nazis get beat up never gets old.
