Kate

As a subscriber, Netflix regularly sends me movie suggestions, and recently, I got an email suggesting Kate, but I had already seen the Netflix action thriller with Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Woody Harrelson when it was released some years ago. Admittedly, I completely forgot about Kate (and I don't mean that in a condescending way), so I'm glad they reminded me about it.

Kate is like a cross between Kill Bill and From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, except Kate came out in 2021, a few years before John Wick.

Kate is a bit formulaic. Set in Osaka, Japan, an assassin is on a journey of revenge (sounds familiar?) against the yakuza. Nevertheless, Kate is entertaining with cool action fight scenes and top-notch direction and cinematography.

Of course, the star of Kate is Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and I've forgotten what a badass she is. The Star Wars: Ahsoka star has done action movies before, like Gemini Man and Birds of Prey, but in Kate, you see her with raw power and toughness. Plus, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a great actress who is married to another great actor, Ewan McGregor.

Come to think of it now, Kate is kind of a precursor to John Wick. But one thing that sets it apart from the Keanu Reeves action flicks is that Kate has a little humor. If you like movies with ass-kicking female leads, I highly recommend Kate on Netflix.
