Guy Ritchie's The Covenant

Not only does Guy Ritchie's The Covenant share the same premise as Kandahar with Gerard Butler, but both films were released about a month apart in 2023. Co-written and directed by Guy Ritchie, The Covenant stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a U.S. Special Forces Master Sergeant in the war in Afghanistan. But his interpreter is not just any Afghan; he was a member of the heroin drug trade in the country. Like in Kandahar, together they must survive and escape from enemy territory.

The Covenant didn't do well upon its release, which I saw in the theater. Have people grown tired of war movies about the Middle East? I'll never get tired of this subgenre of action films. They show us the atrocities and ugliness of war, but these movies also remind us about our humanity. And Kandahar and Guy Ritchie's The Covenant exemplify this notion perfectly.
