Despite the movie title, Netflix's Hit Man is far from being an action movie. Instead, it's a romantic dark comedy about contract killers, and it's based on a real person.
I lived in New Orleans for over ten years, so it's always a delight to see a movie take place in the city. Not only does Hit Man feature "The Big Easy," but it's also about a professor at the University of New Orleans, where I attended.
But wait. There's more!
My work has taken me around the country, and I'm always trying Vietnamese restaurants. To this day, the best pho I've ever had was at a place in New Orleans, off Chef Menteur Highway, called Phở Bằng. Now, it's been decades, and they've apparently moved to another address on the highway, so I don't know if it's still under the same management or if they're using the same recipe for the broth, but I've compared every pho I've had to Phở Bằng's from back in the 1980s and early 1990s.
Imagine my surprise when I saw a scene that was shot at the restaurant in Hit Man.
There were also scenes shot on UNO's campus, bringing back even more memories.
Not to be confused with Hitman, in Hit Man from 2024, Glen Powell plays Gary Johnson, who teaches at the University of New Orleans and works part-time as a technician for the New Orleans Police Department. One day, during a sting operation, he has to step in at the last minute and play a hitman for hire. Gary does so well and continues playing the role, but things get complicated when he meets a highly attractive client, played by Adria Arjona from Andor.
