I have waited years for The Musketeer to become available on video streaming services. From director Peter Hyams (2010: The Year We Make Contact, Timecop, Outland), and as the title suggests, The Musketeer is another reworking of Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers (Les Trois Mousquetaires).
Hyams' The Musketeer is truly an underrated film, and I never understood why it didn't achieve the same success as other remakes. It came out a few days before September 11, 2001, but who knows?
The Musketeer stands out for its swashbuckling, over-the-top action, heavily influenced by Hong Kong-style martial arts. Interestingly, the lead actor, Justin Chambers, looks just like Chris O'Donnell, who appeared in Walt Disney Pictures' film adaptation The Three Musketeers.
Dumas' The Three Musketeers has been adapted into film so many times, and last year, I featured The Three Musketeers - Part I: D'Artagnan, which is a French movie, appropriately enough. The Musketeer is another exceptional rendition of the classic novel, and it's criminal that The Musketeer hasn't gotten the praise and recognition it deserves, but I hope the film does better with video on demand.
