At first viewing, it seemed like Burden was another film about the Ku Klux Klan and racism, but I came to realize it's largely a love story, except this one is based on a true story.
In Burden, members of a local KKK chapter open a museum about the white supremacist organization, but this isn't the 1950s or 1960s America. It's 1996 in South Carolina. Michael Burden was a real Klansman, and Burden is about his incredible journey to redemption.
Burden stars Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy, Troy) and Andrea Riseborough (Oblivion, Disconnect, The Death of Stalin, Birdman), who are almost unrecognizable in the film. Forest Whitaker, Tom Wilkinson, and Usher (yes, the award-winning R&B music artist) round out the cast, and there are terrific performances all around, but Andrea Riseborough, who is British, is always a standout.
Burden is not just a highly recommended movie. The movie offers valuable historical insight and lessons without being preachy. In my opinion, Burden is another excellent film that should be shown in schools.
