Event Horizon

Alien has been the inspiration of countless science fiction films, but Event Horizon has got to be the most Ridley Scott-ish movie ever made.

Incidentally, Event Horizon was another box office flop that became a cult classic. Starring Sam Neill, Laurence Fishburne, Jason Isaacs, and Kathleen Quinlan, the sci-fi horror film takes place in the year 2047 when a space research ship named the Event Horizon that had disappeared for several years suddenly appeared near the planet Neptune. The designer of the ship, played by Sam Neill, invented the "gravity drive" to jump from one location in the universe to another via the creation of an artificial black hole.

Event Horizon came out in 1997, but just a few years ago, I heard a cool story about how Sam Neill, who is from New Zealand, wanted his character in the film to wear a uniform with a patch of the Australian flag, except with the Union Jack replaced by the Aboriginal flag, to honor and respect the indigenous peoples of Australia.

I want to do a Jurassic Park/World movie marathon, but Sam Neill has been memorable in many other films. I featured Daybreakers with Ethan Hawke in MOVIE OF THE WEEK, and Event Horizon is another movie I highly recommend with the Sam Neill, especially if you like horror movies.

Rest in power, Sam Neill. You will be missed.
