From the director of Die Hard and Predator, John McTiernan, The 13th Warrior is based on a novel by Michael Crichton, who also co-produced the film.
The 13th Warrior is about a banished Muslim who joins and befriends a group of Vikings who have volunteered to go fight off an evil entity terrorizing their homeland.
Starring Antonio Banderas, The 13th Warrior was adapted from Crichton's Eaters of the Dead by Warren Lewis and William Wisher, a longtime collaborator of James Cameron and who also co-wrote Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Jerry Goldsmith composed the score, which is one of my favorites, and I could listen to the music from The 13th Warrior all day.
Surprisingly, the movie ran into considerable production issues, involving several reshoots, and went way over budget. Michael Crichton even took over as director at one point. Regrettably, The 13th Warrior was a box office failure when it was released in 1999.
Still, there haven't been many modern films about the Norsemen and Vikings, and The 13th Warrior is an epic film that is grounded in historical accuracy and realism. It's unfortunate that The 13th Warrior hasn't gotten the attention it deserves, as it has become one of the most influential films in cinema.
