American Yakuza

Years before The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Viggo Mortensen was already one of my favorite actors with memorable performances from Crimson Tide and G.I. Jane.

Viggo Mortensen could have been an action star à la Arnold Schwarzenegger, Gerard Butler, and Jason Statham. To see proof, look no further than American Yakuza with its John Woo-inspired action. Incidentally, the film came out a year before Hard Boiled with Chow Yun-fat.

Hollywood has a fascination with the mafia, but the Japanese yakuza has its own sense of intrigue. American Yakuza is particularly interesting because it's about a white American who infiltrates the yakuza.

American Yakuza may be a B-movie, but it has a really solid, good story and decent action. If you like crime action films, definitely check out American Yakuza from 1993.
