Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi

I was taken aback by the negativity around Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi when it came out in 2017. I never had an issue with the arc of Luke Skywalker. After all, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda also went into exile, and Kenobi sacrificed himself in Episode IV – A New Hope.

Nonetheless, Luke Skywalker was ultimately the hero in The Last Jedi, which has been greatly underappreciated. Interestingly, shortly after the release of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, I saw many people praising and thanking Rian Johnson for The Last Jedi. He also wrote and directed Looper, starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

In addition, I appreciated how Rian Johnson introduced the first Asian main character in the Star Wars film series, and I may be partial, but Kelly Marie Tran, who played Rose, was outstanding in The Last Jedi. Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, and Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke) were also standouts, and of course, Daisy Ridley was perfectly cast for the part of Rey. Mark Hamill should have received more accolades for his performance in the movie.

While I thoroughly enjoyed Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, I didn't have a great desire to see it again. The Last Jedi, on the other hand, was more memorable and very thought-provoking, and I genuinely felt for Ben Solo as he struggled internally throughout the film. The Last Jedi also features one of the best cameo appearances in all the new Star Wars films.

On social media, Star Wars "fans" can be very vocal, and The Last Jedi has its critics and haters. In any case, the movie still made over a billion dollars, and in my humble opinion, The Last Jedi is one of the best Star Wars films in the entire franchise.
