In Time

Andrew Niccol may not be well-known, but he is one of the most imaginative and brilliant science fiction filmmakers. So far, I have featured two of his films in Ted's MOVIE OF THE WEEK, Gattaca and Anon. This week, it's In Time with Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, and Cillian Murphy.

In Time is set in a dystopian future where people don't age past 25, and time is currency. Like money, the remaining time in people's lives--be it seconds, minutes, hours, or years--can be transferred or stolen, resulting in the familiar divisive social order.

Andrew Niccol has the exceptional talent for writing, particularly the exposition in his stories. In very little time, you quickly understand the technology and culture in the worlds he creates. He conceives excellent characters and puts them in predicaments.

Unlike Gattaca and Anon, which may be too talky for mainstream audiences, In Time is also an action movie. Futuristic minimalism and cool cars have been a signature of Andrew Niccol's sci-fi films, but it's his thought-provoking stories about humanity that are so compelling. For a movie that's over 14 years old, In Time has aged very well. (Yes, that was a pun.)
