James Gandolfini is famous for his role as Tony Soprano in the highly popular HBO series bearing the character's name, but there's a lesser-known film in which he starred, playing opposite Robert Redford. Directed by Rod Lurie (The Contender, The Outpost), The Last Castle is an interesting spin on the prison film genre by taking place in the military.
Robert Redford plays a lieutenant general who was court-martialed and sent to a correctional facility, which is run with a heavy hand by a colonel played by James Gandolfini. Tensions between the two developed early in the movie, and then it all goes downhill from there. Redford and Gandolfini were terrific in the film, along with the rest of the cast, which included an up-and-coming Mark Ruffalo.
From DreamWorks Pictures, The Last Castle performed poorly at the box office in 2001, but it also came out about a month after 9/11. The Last Castle is so underrated and deserves another look, especially when you have Robert Redford and James Gandolfini in the lead roles.
May they both rest in peace.
