The Electric State

Science Fiction. Check.

Action-Adventure. Check.

Directed by the Russo Brothers. Check.

Like some actors, there are certain filmmakers whose movies I'll watch without hardly knowing anything about them beforehand.

I didn't watch it in its entirety, but based on the trailer I saw, I didn't expect much from The Electric State with Chris Pratt. But every now and again, a movie really surprises me. The Electric State was directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the same director team who made a few of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including Avengers: Endgame. I still consider the Russo's Captain America: The Winter Soldier the best movie in the MCU franchise.

The Electric State has a similar premise to The Creator, in which humans have waged war with robotic machines. However, The Electric State is based on a novel that came out a few years before The Creator. Both films have amazing visual effects, particularly for the AI robots.

In The Electric State, Chris Pratt's character is actually not the protagonist. The film is really about a foster girl trying to find her prodigious brother in an alternate dystopian world in America. I'm always a sucker for good human stories--including when heroes are metaphorically not human.

It's too bad The Electric State hasn't generated much hype or buzz. I don't think the trailer for The Electric State does the film justice. It is an epic movie from Netflix and has become one of my favorite films of 2025 and beyond.
