Tetris

I'm in the small minority of people who never had a Nintendo Entertainment System as a youngling. Being so accustomed to using joysticks, I had always thought the small NES controller with its D-pad was an odd way to play video games at the time. And I was more of an Atari kid with their 5200 and 7800 game consoles.

Fast forward a few years, and I found myself getting a Nintendo Game Boy, which came bundled with the highly popular and addictive game Tetris.

Now, I know a Russian created Tetris, but that's just the tip of the iceberg.

The story of Tetris takes place shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union, starting in the late 1980s. I didn't realize that licensing and distributing intellectual property, such as movies and games, can be such a legal nightmare.

There are countless films about communists and the USSR, but if you want to see what it's really like to live under an authoritarian regime, watch Tetris. The movie is as much about communism in Russia as it is about the popular game.

I love biopics and docudramas, and of all the ones watched, Tetris is one of my top favorites and an absolute must-see.
