Super Speedway

At the right speeds, did you know a Formula One race car can create enough downward force to drive upside down on an inverted road?

Over 25 years ago, long before IMAX cameras were used for feature films, like The Dark Knight and F1: The Movie, there was an IMAX documentary called Super Speedway about Formula One racing and champion drivers Mario Andretti and his son Michael. It was narrated by Paul Newman, who was a racing enthusiast in real life, and follows the Newman-Haas F1 racing team from car development to racing season.

When Super Speedway came out on DVD in 1998, it immediately became one of my favorite demo test discs for home theater systems, particularly for video. Just as fascinating as the 50-minute Super Speedway IMAX film was the "making of" documentary included with the DVD. They had to figure out, for example, how to mount and secure an 80-lb IMAX camera onto a Formula One car. Mario Andretti was not only the driver featured in the film but also served as the cameraman capturing the footage on the racetracks.

I actually don't follow racing, but Super Speedway is so intriguing and remains one of my favorite documentary films.
