As a home theater aficionado, I must have watched the rocket launch sequence in Apollo 13 on the DTS Demonstration DVD about a hundred times. It's a great subwoofer test and still gives me chills to this day.
I hate it when movies mention Christopher Columbus, but Apollo 13 did come out in 1995. Apollo 13 is undoubtedly one of Ron Howard's very best films and tells the incredible true story of the 1970 moon landing mission that went terribly wrong, forcing NASA to figure out how to bring the three-man crew back to Earth with minimal resources.
Tom Hanks plays Jim Lovell, the astronaut commander of the Apollo 13 mission, and leads one of the greatest cast ensembles in cinema. Also amazing was how the production did the zero-gravity scenes without using wiring harnesses on the actors.
Engineers may not exactly be a popular subject in Hollywood, but I don't think space exploration will ever get old. The story of the Apollo 13 mission is a testament to American ingenuity and engineering. It's also about leadership and overcoming adversity. If not for its historical significance, Apollo 13 is an exceptional docudrama and a cinematic masterpiece.
Rest in peace, Jim Lovell.
